Rarely have so many global media, reviewers, YouTubers, and experts agreed on something. The Asus Zenfone 8 is perhaps the best Android to come out this year, however, for us, it has one big flaw. ASUS may not bring it to Colombia.
Asus is already a friend of the house here at Techcetera. In recent years we have reviewed virtually every one of his computers. From the sensible and everyday VivoBook to the more extravagant ROG Zephyrus, passing through the always professional and very well presented ExpertBook; However, we haven’t talked about his smartphones for a long time, the latest being the balanced Zenfone 5z (which was my personal phone for two years) and the pioneer in the gamer scenario, the ROG Phone.
However, we have not heard from them in the world of Smartphones for a long time. There must be some explanation and clearly they are doing very well in the world of laptops, monitors and desktops. However, and hoping not to fall on deaf ears, technology fans ask something. Bring the Zenfone 8.
The new Flagship (Zenfone)
What is it that makes this phone so popular in the tech communities? Well, in fact, there are two good reasons, corresponding to the two models presented by the Taiwanese brand. Speaking of Zenfone 8, this phone is clearly a “sleeper”. If you don’t know the term, this applies to a piece of technology that looks like the most common thing in the world but, it turns out, has the power and performance of the top of the range in its category. The Google Pixel is a great example.
And that’s the thing about the Zenphone 8. Look at it, it can’t seem like more entry-level because they didn’t make it straighter. However, under the gray suit, we have a 5nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G processor (there is nothing smaller on the market), a 5.9″ AMOLED screen (detail we will talk about again) with HDR 10 + , 120Hz refresh rate, 1,000 Nits of brightness (those are iPad Pro numbers) and cinematic-level colors plus it has HiFi sound and stereo speakers.
Everything as I said in a 5.9-inch phone, how did you put it all together and also leave room for a headphone jack? It’s a mystery.
Well now the elephant in the room. The Zenfone 8 has “Only” two cameras and of course perhaps by today’s standards that seems little, but beware, do not forget that the phones with the best cameras on the market, the Google Pixel and the iPhone 12 and 12 mini models have, in fact, two cameras. What Asus did here was very smart, relying on the same Sony IMX 663 sensors they use in their professional video recording Xperia to do less, more, and focus almost exclusively on high-quality still shots, with high levels of stabilization and advanced software correction.
The second reason for the fascination with the new Zenfone is in the other phone that hit the market, the Zenfone 8 Flip. And it is that it is a phone that very well sums up a certain philosophy of Asus that leads them to stand out with their follies.
When we saw the first dual-screen Zenbook, we all thought: How interesting? How could the concept be? This one wasn’t going to last long, after all. Who needs two screens on one computer? Well, several years and three machine generations later, we’ve seen them bring this concept to other Zenbooks, Vivobooks, and Zephyruses.
The persistence in madness creates the need. And that’s the thing with the 8 Flip.
We know that in the Zenfone 7 (which did not arrive in Colombia), it presented a motorized rear camera as was the trend in 2019 and 2020. Many brands abandoned the concept, but not Asus. They not only persisted but also improved it! Introducing in the Zenphone 8 Flip, three cameras, the same cinematic quality of the Sony sensor + a wide dual pixel sensor and a 3x optical zoom camera. All in a 6.67-inch body. Lots of engineering together.
We are talking here about the best that a smartphone can be. The best processor, with the best screen, with the best cameras and even the best sound included, in fact, the Zenfone 8 is $300 cheaper than its equivalent in the apple world but, as a sad ending to this story, neither the Zenfone 6, neither the 7, nor the ROG Phone 2 and 3 have arrived in Colombia, could it be that you are going to leave us wanting Asus?.
